Rachel catlin

Rachel is a composer who mainly specialises in composing electroacoustic music but also has interests in other practices such as more traditional, classically composed pieces and sound installations. Having had a CD and record dealer as a father has meant that her influences are wide ranging, from the likes of Curtis Mayfield to Philip Glass.

Originally coming from a more instrumental background, having played the cello and the saxophone, Rachel became interested in composing at University. Initially she was more interested in traditional composition however in her third year fell in love with electroacoustic and acousmatic music, so much so that she is currently studying a Master’s in electroacoustic composition/sonic art at the University of Birmingham.

LIZZIE KNATT

Primarily a classically-trained recorder player, Lizzie’s musical influences are what some might call ‘eclectic’ – from folk and early music to contemporary and experimental performance. Currently in her second year at the University of Birmingham, Lizzie studies recorder with Annabel Knight and clarinet with Jack McNeill.

Lizzie caught the contemporary music bug while playing with the York-based Chimera Ensemble in 2018. At University, she performs with the New Music Ensemble and manages ‘Creative Exchange’, a collective dedicated to performing student compositions, open scores and improvisation.

During the lockdown, Lizzie has been exploring different ways of music making; creating pieces using text and pre-recorded media, and more recently exploring the interaction between sound and visuals, in collaboration with Owen Russell (tape/electronics, composition). The instrumental sounds you can hear in both of Lizzie’s pieces were played by her, on contrabass recorder (whose meadows) and clarinet/vocals (I am the moon).
